Are you team café or team croissant?
Last year, I did a road trip from Vienna all the way down to Croatia — and I don’t know about you, but for me, holidays mean returning full of new resolutions… Just like when I was a kid going back to school after the long summer holidays and deciding which pens’ color to use for which purpose (…am I the only one here?). So I thought, it would be nice if I would start sharing my work process here. And one year later, it finally has started, with café et croissant!
Baška, Croatia
Yes, I know my resolutions take a long time to happen (if they do). But here we are finally, with my first diary entry! And of course, it’s about food. Actually, no… It’s about one of the basics of life (at least for a French lifestyle): coffee and croissant.
To be entirely honest with you, I don’t really like the taste of coffee, but damn… I love its smell, especially in the morning — it’s one of my madeleines de Proust. And since coffee is basically what makes most of you function in the morning, it deserves its place here.
And then, the croissant… I mean, who doesn’t like croissants? Some days, I personally can’t function without one in my belly.
For this illustration, I decided to use Procreate on my iPad, which is still something I’m learning. The timelapse video below shows the main steps I went through, although the illustration took quite a lot more time to create.
While I had a clear vision of what I wanted to show and the colors I wanted to use, I spent some time working on the cup’s angle, as well as the tablecloth. Should there be folds in the fabric? Long shadows? An old-school tea cloth?
In the end, I decided to go with something more refined that keeps all the focus on our best friends: the coffee and the croissant.
The illustration is now available in my shop in sizes from A4 to A2 — and I'm thinking about making a postcard version too.
I really hope you like this little piece of tasty life as much as I do. Now tell me, are you team coffee or team croissant?
